Location description
Looking across the mouth of the Water of Leith as it widens across the historic Shore. This view gathers the waterfront skyline together with moored boats and barges atop a calm mirror-like surface. Taking the shot from the Old Victoria swing bridge nearby gives the impression of being suspended over the water - which you essentially are. Leith was the city’s working harbour for centuries and the waterfront still features photogenic nautical influences throughout.
Shooting notes
An all-season subject works in most seasons and light conditions, though a still day helps achieve glassy water reflections. If there is enough interesting cloud and patterns in the sky then a wider shot with more foreground and sky works well. If it is an overcast day then this area may end up looking a little flat and washed out. See alternative crop in the photo to the right which was shot on a misty day when less water and sky seemed more appropriate in the final composition.
