Location description

Shot from Waverley Bridge looking up towards Edinburgh’s Old Town, this view gathers the tiered tenements and turrets that climb up Cockburn Street to the Royal Mile. Waverley Bridge sits right beside Waverley Station, so the spot is reached in a couple of minutes on flat ground, though it is a busy thoroughfare with constant traffic and crowds to be aware of. You may need to lean into that and time it so that something interesting is happening in the frame.

Shooting notes

In the summer months during golden-hour, warm low sun illuminates the Old Town stone. You don’t need to zoom in too far to compress the layered buildings into one grand focal plane. Hand held shooting is easiest here without any compromises needing to be made to settings. Work fast always being aware of traffic and pedestrians. The architecture stacks steeply uphill here though the inevitable people and vehicles in the image will help to give it scale. With so much going on in the frame taking multiple frames is recommended.
