Location description
This is familiar Edinburgh view with a unique twist as the specific location the shot was taken is slightly unique. It was taken in the small space in front of the Dugald Stewart Monument (Ref: #02040), between the monument and the tree-line. This location is slightly lower than the popular vantage point next to the Observatory House. Importanly, it separates the clock tower of the Balmoral Hotel from Edinburgh Castle in the distance, thus creating a more comfortable composition.
Shooting notes
A great shot to take after sunset when the city lights start to illuminate, while the setting sun still glows beyond the horizon. A tripod and longer exposure can be handy here to capture the city lights over a number of seconds. To achieve this your timing is important between sunset and blue hour when the emerging city lights balance with the fading evening sky. Experimentaion is key here to find out when that point is.
